After making the 'fractal mountain' with Illuminous in Bryce (here: [link] I imported the original illuminous pic into Bryce and posed them together, and then brutalised the result in PS. All good clean fun :D

Thanks!! In the tutorials I've read about using images in Bryce they waffle on about how the picture has to have an alpha channel. Why do they do that? I imported a 2d picture just as it was - and also used the same picture as a material to colour the terrain - if I can get anything half decent from that I'll post it. Is there something I'm missing? Is it necessary for bump-mapping or something? If you have time to answer that's great, if not - I understand :D I'm just happy it works!

I don't know very much about alpha channels and bump mapping, I need to do some more research on it. But unfortunately, people are more likely to tell you how to do it rather than why it needs to be done, which doesn't help me at all. :D

:) Well, after some reading I see that you need alpha channels if you only want part of the whole picture to appear, for example, an rabbit on a background. You want the background to be transparent and if you give it an alpha channel which masks the background the end result is a rabbit you can put in the grass, instead of a rectangular 2d image with a rabbit in the middle. I think that's right...

Oh ok. I figured it was something like that because I've used those in GIMP to make multi-layered text.
