Well, here's my first attempt at an ultrafractal gnarl. Anyone know how to get the grain out? I want to make gnarls, not whisky. :D

It's a bit of a 'fail' for me, this one, hence its move to scraps. Glad you like it though!!

I don't find it anyhow a fail. I can truly say that this is one of my most favorite abstract pieces =D Mostly because of the tone of colors =)

Well... these gnarls are tricky things, I want to get something professional looking... failing so far. Thanks for the encouragement, though!

Thanks! I'm not at all happy with it, hopefully the post below will help me improve things. I haven't so far found a proper gnarl tutorial. Chat logs do my head in... It would be nice to have some guide to tweaking these things and getting them to look nice. I don't know where to start, and I haven't time to spend hours and hours experimenting.

You have to learn things like max iterations, bailout, etc. to help you out. For instance, with a quaternion, the lower the iterations, the smoother it gets, and the more steps you have, the less holes, etc. It's all a matter of taking the time to learn it all. :D
